Have a Jupiter 6. do I need a moog?
I'm a producer engineer that runs a studio. I have a jupiter 6 that I use quite a bit, mainly to add synth parts to rock/indie rock songs. Mainly lead lines and pads. I really like the Jupiter 6, but I'm wondering if the Moog Little Phatty would be a good addition to the jupiter?

If you gotta come on here and ask us and are unable to convince yourself, then you probably don't need a Moog.

I agree with the guys above.
If you use the Jupiter 6 'mainly to add synth parts to rock/indie rock songs. Mainly lead lines and pads' then you don't really need a moog as it seems the Jupiter 6 is covering your synth needs as it is.
It would be a good addition for sure (any synth is
) , but not really a necessary one, unless you NEED the moog sound - in which case, only a moog will do.
I'd say 95% of listeners dont care/notice what synth is used on a track, and then the Moog name is so synonymous with synths that a lot of people would hear a synth part and immediately think 'that moog sounds cool'...

Just buy one, you know you want to.

Haha, that's what I've been waiting to hear.crofter wrote:Just buy one, you know you want to.
I suppose I will just need to go play one, and see if it does some stuff different enough from the Jupiter to make it worth it. I find myself using the jupiter lots, and it's SOO much easier to mix than when the synth sounds are from software. It may be nice to have some more options in the studio.

First of all, Buyer's Guide.
If you really want to impress them though, get a modular system. Blows minds every time, and because they have no idea how to use one they'll think you're a wizard for being able to.
If your clients would be impressed by the LP and more likely to pay money to use your studio than another one, then yes you need a Moog. You should consider how the fact that it's a model currently available and not that expensive affects how bands think about it though, they might not be that impressed if it's something that they think they could afford. But hey, it's not a Microkorg.cchord59 wrote:I'm a producer engineer that runs a studio.

No. You need a real synth.

I'm lucky enough to own a JP6 and a Voyager and here is my take: If you are using the Jup successfully for pads and unison leads, then stick with it. I hope you have the Europa mod because it just makes the beast even more functional, stable and fun.
What you're not using the Jup for is bass. An area where the Moogs excel and the Jup needs a little coaxing. I'd say go for a Phatty or Voyager only if you want that "Moog bass sound".

Re: Have a Jupiter 6. do I need a moog?
It is a question of do you need or do you want a Moog? You proably do not "need" a Moog unless you want that recognizable Moog Bass that everyone seems to love. I think the you more or less "want" one but just want somebody to justify your purchase so you don't feel guilty about it. I'm the same way!
So what it basically boils down to is that if it something you really want, just buy it. If you don't like it or regret it, you can always sell it.
