A Proteus 1 can be had for around $75.
A Roland JV-880 for about the same.
Used to have a Kawai K1m, can be had for about $60.
But, if you ask me, your best value is a Korg Wavestation SR. Usually go in the $175-200 range, but I lucked out and got mine on Ebay for $85. in perfect shape.
Stay away from 4op FM unless you're really good at programming FM.

Another vote for TX81Z. They are being almost given away (even on ebay).

uhmm why 4op in particular? Far easier than 6 op and the extra waveforms on the TX81z make it fun to use (for FM). FM is very expressive, layer it up, put it through some effects and it will run rings around any cheap rompler if you are looking for synthesis rather than sample playback!

thanks guys - i'm leaning towards a JV-1010 if I get one for cheap, some really decent out of the box sounds there it looks like.
On the FM front , I have a Yamaha PSS480 so I'm familiar with that sound...I've thought about setting it up in the mix just as a module tucked away somewhere, I think it can receive on a specified MIDI channel (I know some old/simple synths can't)
Wavestation is cool too - someone on c-list here is trying to get like $400 for one haha.

Edit: the emu proteus 1000 has a 32 meg sound set vs. 8 meg stock on the JV1010; that's a pretty big step in realism (potentially) and they run about $50 cheaper. What do you guys think about those stock?
I had an mp-7 but admittedly did NOT like that e-mu rom (mo-phatt or whatever)
