Nord Lead 2
Machinedrum
Waldorf Attack

I know the MD is a better all in one box but I'm interested in the depth of the individual sound engine and sound quality

MD by far. Depth of engine? check. Sound quality? check. Especially the UW version.

Re: best digital drum synth engine?
machinedrum simply because of simplicity and versatility
outside of that
waldorf attack and ultrabeat
nord lead 2 not at all, though its drum mapping thing is nice - in taht case waldorf micro Q.

ER-1 is not the best by any means, but I think it deserves an honourable mention for punching above it's price-point.
