Which synth next?

Post by falloutsoldier » Thu Aug 30, 2012 10:44 pm

Hi there!

this is my 1st post on VSE forum, been lurking for a little while

just kinda GASing for a new synth at the moment, wanted your advice on what u think would fit nicely with what i have

I currently have

Moog Voyager
Roland Juno 106
Roland JD 800
Waldorf Microwave 1
Yamaha DX7
Yamaha TG33

kinda thinking about a Roland D 50, but thinking I do have quite a lot of digital already

I make dance music right across the board, and lots of weird electronica to boot

I look forward to hearing your views!!!

Whats your price range? That could dictate our answers. Also, do you have a preference when it comes to modern/vintage?

thanks for the reply!

kinda dont really want to spend over £500, but i would rather spend like £250 / £300

think id rather go for a vintage, but could be tempted by a new one

How about one of the modern analog monos like the MiniTaur, MiniBrute or Kraftzwerg?

An older Virus would fit nicely with what you have now.

I agree about another monosynth, but maybe something different than the moog sound, so think minibrute (if you can find one) Mopho, Yamaha CS 10 or 15, OR, I'd encourage you to look at maybe a drum synth for something completely different than what you have. I got a DRM mk3 recently and I was thinking about selling it, but then last night I spent a couple of hours with it and it's unreal. It's basically 8 synth voices, geared towards percussion, but way fun to just make a beat and then just tweak/mute parts. Here's a video showing the best bits of my improvisation. Just an idea...

I recommend you look closely at one of the V-Synths. If you can afford one, it will certainly be able to deliver some craziness to your electronic music! :D

It depends on what kind of sounds you think are missing, how much you can spend, rack or not,...

V-synth is nice (from what I heard), something like a Virus (however, has a distinctive sound), MS2000 maybe, or a Nord Lead, JP8080....

If you make many different kinds of music you have a lot of options I believe, unlike me where I make or 4/4 hardcore or soundsscapes to fool around...
I want a minibrute :)

thanks for all the replies! yeah i brought a vermona DRM3 an i didnt really gel with it, but I was lucky enough to be able to swap it for an MPC60 with a friend.

not really sure i want another mono, I have a love hate relationship with my moog, sometimes I love it & sometimes i hate if for being too funky (ie sounding like funk) for my tastes

i think im kinda set on a d50 unless someone can persuade me otherwise.

does anyone have much experience with a D50 or D550? will it fit into what i have already well?

I was toying with getting a d550 cos it will be better space wise & my girlfriend is less likely to notice it loll

but then again rack mounts arnt as fun as real keyboards to programme / play

does d50 keyboard have after touch? maybe i could use one as my master keyboard

JP-8000 comes to mind. Plays nice with a JD-800.

^this. I was thinking you needed a sampler, thought v-synth, and then was reminded about the d-50 card in the post above so figured I'd repost it.
