jx3p sequencer or juno 60 arppegiator

Post by princefan3 » Fri Nov 30, 2012 9:20 pm

Hi Guys...want that Cabaret Voltaire sound...i know that kirk used the juno 60 to death.

i run an atari sequencer anyway 1040 st.

im on the verge of spending out some dosh for either one of these units..

i like the idea of the jx 3p running its own sequencer pattern as it gives more flexability over programming your
own pattern in midi or with a 707.... against an arppegiated pattern of notes 60. and hand playing.

i will be using a 707 to fire the machines off, so i suppose midi does not matter unless the 60 wanders.

would i get the same sort of sound with a jx3p...and would i get more use out of this than the juno.

was wondering what your thoughts were...

I'd say the JX would give you more flexibility, as you can program notes in the order you play them, instead of just chords. I would count on midi either way, I know the 60 wanders like crazy!

The Juno 60 is nice, but not worth the prices they go for now. I'd say the JX.

With any Juno model, you only get a single audio oscillator per voice. The JX envelopes aren't the quickest, but think of what anyone can do with 2 oscillators per voice.

Roland's R&D department wanted a synth series which would be familiar for DX7 users, but they luckily knew that (at the time) the players still wanted realtime controllers to go with their analog rodents. Get yourself a 3p with the PG200.

well, I've had a jx3p, a juno 60 and now have a juno 6 and I've never experienced the arp drifting with a cv trigger. And the arp can get pretty interesting if you want. The key is to not just send a standard 4/4 rhythm to it. I've been using a midi to cv converter and sending the gate part of the sequence to my juno or programming patterns with a xoxbox (same idea) to get more interesting patterns out of my cv controlled arps.

Also, if you modulate the filter on the juno 60 or six with external lfos/sample and hold, etc it gets more lively. But then again I have a lot of existing gear that makes the juno sound more interesting. The jx3p on its own has way more possibilities than a juno, but has more in common with a jupiter 6 sonically than a Juno to my ears, in the sense that its more about complex sounds than simpler warmer tones.

Here's a video I made showing the juno 6 with external filter control and the arp rate controlled by a xoxbox gate output. Check it out starting at 13 minutes as the first part is me comparing the juno 6 my alpha juno.

also, the other thing you need to think about is do you want to have real time playing/interaction with the sequence or do you want to preprogram melodies. with the juno you can change the notes in real time with the arp where as the jx sequencer is more about pre making melodies and playback.

I also second the comment to tweak the internal resonance trim pots to push the jx-3p a bit further. I tweaked mine so far that it would self resonate at the half way mark and it was crazy fun playing the filters in the audible range.

got to play a juno 60 and jx3p side by side at used shop, the juno was only $100 more, although the arp was fun and programming was a lot faster the overall sound and flexibility of the jx won me over. and now with the pg200 its a dream, and soon with the kiwi upgrade (!)
My modular so far: Q104, Q106, Q107, Q108, Q109 x2 , Q116, Q118, Q127 w/Q140, Q130, STG Wave Folder, playing with Moog Voyager, VX-351, CP-251, MF-104M (x2 STEREO!)

I have a book about Cabaret Voltaire called "The Art of the Sixth Sense" and there's a section where they talk a bit about their gear and song writing process. The interviews in it were from the later 80's and they mention only owning two synthesizers. They don't mention which ones specifically, but I've been many pictures and footage of them with the Juno 60 and one of the E-mu sampler synths. Prior to getting the Emu, I'm pretty sure they were using the Juno 60 with the JSQ-60 sequencer sync'ed up to a TR-808. You can hear the combo all over "The Crackdown" and "Microphonies" LPs. Once the E-mu came into it play, it was all cut/paste sample sequencing.

I have used a Juno 60 a lot and I ended up buying a Jx3p...

You'd find that what most people say about the low-end of the 3p is true, but the 2VCO/voice makes a huge difference. Tuning 2 square waves a 5th step and programming a sequence... It sounds so much bigger than the 60, and it's like there's more of it to go around. I do miss the chorus on the Junos, but the 3p has a pretty good one, too.

Also, if you don't want the PG-200, Kiwi makes a programmer for those hard-to program synths, including the 3p, the 8p, and the DW-8000 (another great-sounding inexpensive synth that gets ignored). Plus they have that upgrade... http://kiwitechnics.com/patcheditor.htm
