I think this is a key point. Not much room for "analogue warmth" in chiptune land. What you probably want is something with colourful DACs rather than an analogue filter.

Not quite sure what you mean by 8bit osc (other than literally an 8bit digital waveform I suppose...) but I would suggest you check out an Evolver. It's surprisingly good for doing "chiptune" type sounds and has 12/24db/oct filters. You've got variable cycle pulse waves, a four track step sequencer and maybe a big bonus for you is that you can upload user waves to the two digital oscilators so you could make your own 8bit waves if you wanted; the built in waveforms are 12bit and from the Prophet VS. It's also really easy to do octave steps with the LFOs, for instance.

The Shruthi is open source though isn't it? Can't be such a big step to just fix the oscillators with simple 8bit waves, so I'm not sure what you were missing there.

The other option of course, if you're slightly masochistic would be the Mirage.
Then you can theoretically load anything from nes or sid wavesamples to your own farts in 8 bit glory then smash it all through its analogue filter.

Still in Poly-800 range if you take that quote out of context. Yes, the oscillators are technically Digitally Controlled Oscillators (emphasis on the "Controlled" part); they are analog DCOs but they sure sound dirty. They don't make perfect saw or square waves which gives the sound its own unique gritty flavor. You can make CZ-type sounds with it...

Now, if you're looking for tweakability, the Poly ain't got it...at least not unmodded.

They don't make perfect saw or square waves which gives the sound its own unique gritty flavor.

They're not DCOs actually, they're the analogue outputs of digital counter chips. That's why the waveforms are just a rough approximation of the waves you would expect.
