does quality play a part in this? are machines like the 606/707 built with longevity in mind? It seems nearly every mc-909 or mc-505 i come across has some buttons replaced or this or that not working, a dead LCD screen, etc. I am sorry I keep going on and on and asking new questions constantly, I just want to make an educated decision on how to go about all of this.

606 and 707 were not built with longevity in mind, they were built as cheaply (plastic cases) as Roland could do at the time. I imagine a lot of them have had switches replaced/go bad as well.

Things wear out, that's just how it is. If you're worried about that then buy something new with a warranty.

space6oy, I took your advice, picked up a 707. Thank you everyone for your responses. This thread can be officially retired now.
