I'm stuck between these two and I was wondering which one is the better buy?

The R8 is miles better than the RX5 in my opinion. Something more modern like an MPC1000 which you can load up with samples from both machines is an even better buy than either though.

What are you looking to spend? And what's the price difference between the R's and the M? The rx5 is pretty damn affordable at the moment! I've never used an r8 myself, but they look cool. Can't you do better than the mpc 1000 for the money as far as sampler/ sequencers go? What about that sp thing that madlib popularized? Sort of getting out of drum machine territory though, although if you have the samples you can use them as such. Don't know if they have individualoouts though.

Yeah, MPC1000 is ultimately the most flexible buy, but if you want the hardware, I do sympathize (got all 3 here). The RX5 is definitely most connected late 80's (very "Roxette" FWIW) and crazy underrated at the moment, while the R8 is a bit more sympathetic to 2013 ears. That said, if you're going R8, then go R8-II, and if you go for either of those, plan on seeking out either carts (4 for the RX5, plus VERY rare 3rd party ones) or cards for the Roland (# depending on whether you go v1 or 2). Good luck!

The SP-303 is a massive step down from the MPC1000 in every way except for the effects. Which you get one of at a time on the SP, with three knobs to tweak the parameters. The SP sequencers really suck compared to the MPCs, when I owned an SP-404SX it just made me want to buy an MPC again (had owned and sold a 1000 before that) because the SP sequencer is so terrible. It doesn't have individual outs either.

I found my RX5 and R8 samples. They are available for download here. Get a black MPC 1000 and have them both. :)

not sp-303, stab....SP-1200 E-mu

@OP yamaha's RY30 is the better 16-bit R8 alternative than the RX-5 is(12-bit)
RY30 has a great sound, nice filter(!) and some really nice features

Haha, I forgot that Madlib was into both of those... I did mean the sp303. The 1200 would sound nice though if you have the cash for it... :geek:

LOL i must have missed that. did he put the sp-303 on his LP art too??
i get a funny feeling that Roland paid him to"use it" , and he just took the cash to buy backup sp-1200s...
that's what i'd do if i were him :wink2:

(hey why no 'tongue out the side of mouth' emotimo-con here?)
