!Buying My first synth! helppp

Post by pandolfo » Tue Jan 06, 2015 9:11 pm

Hey all,

I am on the fence about what to buy, so I wanted to ask.

I love the ability to manipulate sounds and add effects live right from the synth,
the microkorg first caught my attention because of its wide range of editing capabilities,
I then saw the XL and I loved those sounds as well, then I heard about the R3.

They all seem like great synths.

My question is, which of these will create some great modern electronic sounds.
I believe R3 has more modern sounds compare to the micro from reading other forums.
I thought I was settled on an R3 but after hearing the build quality isn't strong I am still questioning what to get.
If you guys have any recommendations, your opinions would help a lot.

Have you heard about the Radias? ;)
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

Any of those synths would give you great modern sounds, but again, it comes down to what you're really after. What kind of music do you plan to make with it and what do you mean when you say that you like to add FX live right from the synth?

Obviously build quality matters to you, but what else is a priority? Do you want to process external sounds with the filter, internal FX or vocoder? How much polyphony do you want/need? Do you need an arpeggiator or sequencer? Is size an issue? Does it need to run on battery? Do you need USB connectivity? Are you open to other synths besides the smaller Korgs? Anywho, there's a lot to consider. Give us as much information as you can and we'll get you on the right path. Also, welcome to the forum! :welcomeparty:

I am open to any other companies, but I am looking for something that's not huge, preferably on the smaller side. But I want to control like eq and sound effects right from the synth I guess, so I can create my own sounds off the instrument, or edit sounds they have on the synth.

I like sounds like this

The Radius is a little big, I'm more into the smaller synths like the R3.

Might be a bit lacking in hands on control, but it seems to be a fan favorite, and I think it might be a good synth to nail some of the sounds in those videos.

Can the R3 produce similar sounds?

The R3 and MicroKorg XL are both based on the Radias sound engine so the overall sound of all three is similar. The original MicroKorg is based on he MS2000 sound engine which is older, less polyphony (4 notes vs. 8) and fewer features.

The R3 can do everything that MicroKorg XL can do, plus more. It also has full sized keys which is a plus.

If you can find a used one to buy, it's a much better choice than either MicroKorg.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

The Novation Ultranova is like an R3 but better. Was looking at getting an R3 a while ago until I tried an Ultranova, you can't even compare them.

I'm deciding between the R3 and ultranova or (?).
Are there any other synths i should take a look at?
Which is better at creating your own sounds, adding effects, or just sound in general. I can't decide.
I like chill funky rap, electronic music like i posted above.
