Sequential Prophet 2000 or Korg DSS-1

Post by HappyFunTimes » Wed Jan 13, 2016 2:56 am

I have a P2000, and I have an opportunity to swap it for a DSS-1. I'm thinking the Korg will be easier to use. I really like the sound of the P2000, and the keybed is the best I've played on a synth. I think they are both analog digital hybrids. Advice? What would you do?

The main thing about the DSS-1 is whether you're willing to put up with the absurdly slow disk drive for it. (Seriously, we're talking Commodore 1541 levels of performance here. It can take a full minute to load a sample set/performance patch. There's at least one third-party fix for this, but it seems to be expensive/hard to come by.) It also doesn't have the wonderful clacky spring-switch keybed of the DW-8000 (my second favorite after the Mk.1 DX7.) And the LFO can't be set to anything other than a sine wave.

If you can get past the shortcomings, though, it's pretty wonderful - it doesn't have the split/layer features of the P2000, but it does have two of the awesome Korg digital delay units that make the DW-8000 such dark magic (and they can be chained or output in stereo,) a few other goodies like oscillator sync, and that great SSM filter sound. I couldn't get over its flaws, but I can definitely respect it nonetheless.

Check straylight engineering for his combined SCSI interface and RAM expansion for the DSS-1. Oscillator synch on a sampler seems like such a cool idea...

IIRC sync is limited to simple looped waveforms, so you can't do some of the crazy things that, for example, the SQ-80 lets you do with it. Still, it's pretty neat.

Both fell into my hands within the past year.

They are both very great but very different.

Prophet sounds much nicer as far as smoothness of the filter goes and low noise.

The DSS-1 sound is a bit clunkier cheaper but has many quirky synthesis options that make it one of a kind. It gives me that PPG style and sound more than the Prophet does. A little fuzzier.

I got a bunch of discs with the DSS-1 so thats probably why I still have it. The Prophet 2000 keyboard was stock so I sold it quickly. If it comes up locally at a nice price grab either one. I personally preferred the DSS-1 but they are both great at a decent price point.
