Affordable analogue synth recommendations?!

Post by sidneyft98 » Sun May 01, 2016 2:34 pm

Hi! A friend sent me a link to this place so im pretty new here.

Anyway for my 18th birthday I'm looking to find a analogue synth - preferably with an arpeggiator or sequencer - for under £500. Does anyone have any recommendations? I really liked the look, sound and features (like the patch bay) of the MS 20 but I was sad to see it didn't have an arpeggiator function. Anyone know any affordable synths like this? I'm looking to get something that can get nice retro LCD Soundsystem-like tones (think of/check out the synth bass sound on Get Innocuous!) but can also be used to create a chaotic noisy mess!

I'd also like to note that it would be preferably quite compact and portable as I'll be using it in my bedroom etc.

Thanks

Welcome.

Ones to check out :

Arturia Minibrute
Arturia Microbrute
Novation Bass Station 2
Korg Minilogue
Waldorf Pulse 2
DSI Mopho

Plenty of Youtube demos of these so you can listen before making a decision. The last 2 will require a MIDI controller to play as they are desktop synths with no keyboards.

@Psy_Free

So I've checked out the synths. I like the mini-brute, minilogue the bass station. But I felt like they had too many different features that i would really use that would inevitably bump up the price (ie, delay, polyphonic option, brute factor....). Are there any maybe more vintage styled synths with a simple saw, sine, square, LFO, ASDR etc with an arpeggiator that are cheaper than these?

Thanks anyway

"Vintage" and "cheaper" are 2 words you don't typically see in the same sentence.

The newer analog synths that Psy_Free listed are all great places to start. The biggest bang for buck probably being the Korg Minilogue. But if you're just looking for the cheapest basic monosynth with a sequencer you can get a lightly used Microbrute for a couple hundred dollars on eBay.

So i've decided that the best bet for me is an MS 20 mini with an SQ1. They seemed to be paired together often enough as well
