Well, that one was mostly 303... but I'd look at an Access Virus or Novation Nova as a start.

The TB-3 might be available for pretty cheap, and would probably be the cheapest, best source for basic 303 sounds as a hardware instrument. You're looking at a lot of mono synth sounds, roland drums, and maybe some digital pads.

The virus is certainly a good choice, but let's consider an alternative.

A mono synth and a sampler could be more period specific. A TR-8 and TB-3 would be great for the rythm section, and a monosynth and sampler combination would be ideal for leads, sound effects, pads and various samples, etc. I'd choose one with good self oscillation.

What's your budget like? If I wanted to do the whole thing for the least $$, I'd use an akai S series and a TB-3. That's like under $400.

If I wanted to have fun after the basics, I'd get an Ms-20 mini. If I really wanted to splurge and nail the acid sound, I'd substitute the Ms-20 mini for an SH-101. Both are great Goa monosynths.
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

What a classic - I have that on double gatefold vinyl with the bonus 12 inch . Listen to this demo of the tb-3. How much of the sound you're looking for does this cover? Then think up from there.

The C bank starts to get into some cool non-303 sounds that could even cover the non-303 territory on Trip Tonight, especially on a budget.

get all the synths recommended here and then buy them 3 more times! also a 32 channel mixing desk (which I honestly think most of them had) I'm not even kidding! a lot of psy / goa trance producers back in late 90s, the sound scape is huge!

edit: or software mixer, I have no idea why i'm talking about mixers in the first place sorry.
