Korg DS-8

Postby flux » Thu Dec 29, 2016 1:53 am

Does anyone know if the key bed action on the korg DS-8 is as noisy and clunky as the korg DW8000? I've been looking to get a DS-8 for a while now but I'm worried it will have the same clunky keys. I know this seems like a stupid thing to complain about but I've actually received noise complaints from the woman in the apartment below me from playing my DW. Admittedly, the keys are obnoxiously loud. Also another contributing factor for me to buy a DS-8 would be how the E piano sounds compared to the DX7 E piano. Are they comparable at all? If I can get the DS-8 E piano to sound fairly close to the DX7 that's a huge selling point for me. But I know a DX7 is widely considered a better FM synth, so maybe I should just go with one of those? If anyone has experience with either of these issues, please speak up because any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No idea about the keybed, but none of the 4-op FM synths match the DX7 for sound, and the DS-8 is FM stuck in a mimicry of analog subtractive synthesis, at that. So I wouldn't buy it expecting to get the famous DX7 electric piano sounds, though it might be interesting in its own right.

The key bed of my DS-8 is not too bad. It's not silent and might be my loudest keyboard, but nothing like your description of the DW8000. No complaints from the downstairs neighbours.

It has some very nice e-piano sounds but no competition for the DX-7.

Having owned both boards (I bought a DS 8 new back in 1987, and have used DWs 6000 and 8000, and my EX 8000 is still in the rack) I feel at least somewhat qualified to respond.
If the DW 8000 keyboard is "clacky", the DS 8 action is "spongy". Nowhere near as noisy.
Regarding it's ability to mimic the DX 7 e.piano, it's close, but no cigar - however, you can layer, split, and stack up to 8 voices with a DS, so if you can cope with a 4 voice poly EP, you'll find it comes a lot closer. And the delay is the same as the DWs'.
Hope that helps.

The keys are different, and not clacky at all. I kinda like them, as Max said, kinda spongy or whatever. f**k a dx7 as being the pinnacle of FM. Fm can be approached in many ways, and I quite enjoy the way the ds8 does it. The multi use delay is what set's it apart from everything else.

Yeah, that delay is dark spacey magic for sure.
