Help with 90s synth

Post by dio83 » Sat Jun 10, 2017 10:36 pm

hey,

i'm trying to find which synth was used in this song at 24 seconds. i saw this song being played on top of the pops and the guy was using a DX7. I have Dexed and FM8 and cannot for the life of me find it. i don't know what it's called. it was really popular in early 90's eurodance.

also, appears here.

thanks a lot for your help

The DX7 was a staple keyboard for TOTP mimes as they always had ready access to them. What a band mimes with on TOTP usually doesn't have anything to do with what was used on record.

Given the genre and the time period, it's likely to be a mid-priced analog polysynth like a Juno 106, ESQ1, something in that area. Or samples of same, or at the outside, something digital like the M1. Doesn't sound DX7-ey to me, and they ren't really used that much in the early 90s dance music genre, anyway.

Regardless of the DX7 being a stage prop, as desmond pointed out, such a sound is of course quite possible to craft with FM8. But indeed you probably won't find that exact sound in the default FM7 factory set.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yes, i was thinking it didn't sound like anything from the DX7. I have a vst of the juno so I'm currently going through it to see if anything pops up. Because of the fact that this sound is exactly the same over lots of different tracks i've heard, i figured it had to be a preset. I would love to craft the synth myself but i just know i'll never get it sounding that good
