New beat / EBM agressive synth

Postby martin » Tue Jun 19, 2018 1:38 pm

Hi,
This topic is a bit specific but i didn't find a solution on the web so it might help in the futur. :) I try to make synth lines that sound in the EBM / new beat way. To be precise, like the synths at the openings of such songs :
 Tanzen - Tragic error
Watch on youtube.com

Amnesia - Hysteria
Watch on youtube.com

Klatsche in die Hande - Tragic error.
Watch on youtube.com

I tried on various FM Synths VSTs like dexed or operator on ableton but i don't manage to get the right sound. My result sounds too mild and smooth (like in this song : Time Modem - The time of gathering
Watch on youtube.com
) and i would like to make it more gritty and aggressive. Do you think it is a matter of settings in Dexed or do you have any recommandation for a VST?
Thx :D

You're really not going to get those sounds from Dexed. You might be able to, but it will be pushing FM synthesis to get what was an analog synth.

The pretty much standard synth for EBM these days is an Access Virus. People also use things like Microkorgs, Mininovas, Blofelds, etc. To get that kind of sound in software, I can point you to Tyrell N6 (which is free), Predator (which is commercial), V-station (commercial, but bundled with many Novation controllers) and a few others.

They usually used Alpha Junos back in the day. Same with Moog Prodigys and M1 and Wavestation (latter 2 later beginning in the early 90’s).
Tyrell is great for that kind of stuff. A few of the presets are geared towards this music.
Korg, Casio and Yamaha (Minilogue, WK-7600, SK-1, MX49)
FL Studio 12, VSTs, MIDI keyboard
Non synths
Acoustic guitar, harmonicas, recorders, flutes, tin whistle, kazoo, egg shakers, log drum, pellet drums, xylophone bowl.

well, and a lot of early EBM bands used Ensoniq synths. The VFX is all over "Tyranny For You".
