Strings

Post by pcsxdc » Sun Oct 08, 2006 10:57 pm

I want a program that I can use to create an EXTREMELY realistic sounding orchestra. Is Gary Garritan Personal Orchestra the way to go, or is there something better?

Great first post pcsxdc, Good questions on the good time :) grab the Oct 2006 version of FM (mine is UK edition), they're featuring "the best strings on test" with some audio example on the DVD. But in case you don't need the detail, here's the contenders in the article:
GPO (got the Value Award) GBP 115
IK Multimedia (Miroslav Philharmonik) GBP 289
EastWest Quantum Leap (Symphony Orchestra) from GBP 99
Vienna Symphonic Library (got the Platinum Award) from GBP 230--> FM winner of the bunch
Peter Siedlaczek's String Essential's GBP 232
MOTU Symphonic Instrument GBP 209

and I agree with FM about Vienna, look for more about it here: http://www.vsl.co.at/

Even the August 2006 issue of Keyboard mag is also featuring "Virtual Orchestras: Compared and Explained" :
The contenders are divided into:
Over $1000
EastWest Quantum Leap (Symphony Orchestra) ProXP $5,485
Sonivox Complete Symphonic Collection $2,995
Vienna: Symphonic Cube $4,620 (around $2000 for the complete strings collection)

Notes that for above high end package, there's a smaller separate components sold for cheaper. You might get that separate package, dedicated for strings only and not the entire orchestral instruments. This article is about VOrchestral.

Under $1000
GPO $199
IK Multimedia (Miroslav Philharmonik) $599
MOTU Symphonic Instrument $295
Steinberg Halion Symphonic Orchestra $749

The GPO and Finale/Sibelius integration got a spotlight in the article, while the Viena Cube is still the king of the bunch by technology, sound quality and realism. Seems like both magazines have quiet a similar view.

Additionally, if you are using either Emulator X or Proteus X software and a fans of E-mu sampler legacy, make sure to check E-mu's Modern Symphonic Orchestra (10Gb/5 DVDs for $329.99) that's being bundled with the Overture 4 SE, seems like a great package with some FLEX technology, nice demos on the site: http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp ... duct=14274

Trully a good year for Virtual Orchestra! And a bad year for hardware synth that we love and care, those good ol' days, aaahhhh..LOL :O)

I've got Garritan Personal Orchestra. It's a b*tch getting convincing sounds with some of the instruments- but not with the strings. They're done quite well with that program. In fact... I think I'll go use it right now...
Korg MS20 & Wavestation A/D, Roland Juno 60 & Juno 106 & MKS50 & D110 & MC202, Ensoniq EPS, Yamaha FB01, SP07b, Casio CZ5000 & SK1, Alesis Micron, Cakewalk Z3ta+, Propellerhead Reason, Garriton Personal Orchestra

Just ask a symphony orchestra to play it...
A synthesizer will be for you what you want it to be...
