Your favorite software synths

Post by j fish » Mon Jul 09, 2007 2:09 pm

This has probably been asked before (I checked old threads but couldn't find anything though) but I'm curious to fin out.
Which soft synths are your favorites/which ones do you use the most?

Since I'm not a programming wizard at all, I'm very keen on plugs re-creating classic synths and other keyboard-instruments.
My personal faves at the moment are:

G-Media "MTron"
G-Media "Melohman-Minimonstra"
Native Instruments "B4 II"
Native Instruments "Pro 53"

and just to throw in an oddity:

4-Front Piano Module (Because it reminds me of the marvelous lo-fi quality of the old piano where I went to school)

Ok, your turn....

Sytrus, Z3ta+, ImpOscar, Nexus. Those are the greatest things I tried.

FM7/8, Massive, Predator, are very interesting but I'm more towards the one I mentioned above.

Reason's Maelstrom. What a fun synth. I also use Z3ta+, CS-80V & FM7 a lot. My favorite right now though is SQ-8L, Buchty's Ensoniq SQ-80 emulator. Very straight forward to use and fits my music wonderfully. I wonder how alike the softsynth and the hardware synth are.

I <3 these.

ReFX Vanguard - Great for gates. I think it's extremely good at what it does, and is very underrated.

Cakewalk z3ta - Cakewalk would've done me a huge favor by replacing several of the included synths with this in sonar.

Krakli EZ-Poly - Fun little freebie, Nice arpeggios. used this & izotope vinyl to make some tracks with a nice boards of canada style vibe

NI FM7 - IMO, this was one of the first relevant softs, b/c instead of trying to simply emulate hardware, it surpassed it.

Luxonix Purity - Nice all purpose rompler, very cpu efficient. If you've never touched this one, i suggest giving it a try. It goes much deeper than I expected.

Arturia Minimoog V -This one tends to divide people, b/c I know some folks that feel if the filter isn't analog, it's worthless. I've never owned a real moog. I've played them and I am a fan of the warmth, but the features & convenience of soft works well for me

AraldFX DKS Pro - My new fave for glitchy beats =

ReFX QuadraSID - Keeps me happy until i find a SIDstation.

Also - Angular Momentum makes some very fun synths.

Here's why I like FM8: *click*

 :D

Spend an hour or so on it, pure FM8. It's not 100% sararr but I guess it's reasonably close. And since the breathy sound is 4 ops with a large number of routings between them, the sound can be changed everywhere.

1) Arturia Moog Modular V - Best analogue emulation I've heard even with the small glitches.
2) NI FM7 - Most comprehensive FM synth ever (don't like the FM8 UI)
3) Virsyn Cube - Most innovative synth design in years.
4) Reaktor - I've never created my own designs but the huge amout you get is more than good enough for me.
5) ImpOscar - Sounds nothing like the real thing but an excellent well designed and decent sounding softsynth.
6) Albino 2 - Nice filters, nice simple design.
7) Spectronics Atmosphere - OK its a ROMpler but look no further for pads, sweeps and strings.
9) Rebirth - ACEEEEED!
10) Tapeworm - Freebie Mellotron!

I use hardware almost exclusively and I haven't bought any soft synths separately, but I do have Logic Pro and must say that Sculpture is very cool.
