Try this.

Or Guru. Or Fruity Loops. Or anything actually, because any sample playback device is perfect for making hip hop beats on.

Definitely the proteus vx. Just beam up the spmulator and it's there. It would also load the Mo Phatt banks and other E-mu's beat oriented libraries.

I like the sampled drum hits holder idea.
Battery 3 is great because you get to decide how many Cells (pads).
You can alos layer and multi-trigger the hits.

GURU has the onboard step-sequencer to lay out your beats...

check out d16 group and AudioRealism for two proper TR series emulations also with step sequencers included.

For the samples themselves you can hit up Sony Creative, Big Fish Audio and Ueberschall for sounds.
Old skool rules for hitting up all the popular sample sites for the classic break beat chops and archives of classic drum machines.

For acoustic kits to do your own sound design with you can't beat BFD 2.
The effect engine is strong enough to vinylized crunchyness. Addictive Drums is a lighter choice that's still a great option. For Vinyle-styled loops (including some very nice kits) Stylus RMX is a good choice.

For original drum sounds from scratch, I like Drumatic and it's free.
For super-quick step-sequencers I like iDrum by iZotope.

It's not the VST, it's the sample library. Get yourself a nice one and you're done.

Any other VST is going to do exactly the same - e.g. play back samples. If your samples suck, you're not going to get anything nicer.
