The reason Arturia waited so long to release the Jupiter-8V was according to them, that they didn't get the license to use the Roland Jupiter name for a looong time. Same reason they say they'll never release an Oberheim softsynth clone. The new owners of the name have refused every proposal to use the Oberheim or OB-name on any official product except their own.

Some cheeky ppl work around this calling their synth OP-X or SOB, but that won't sell as well as a softsynth bearing the real name of its clone, I think. People will see it as a more "serious" product when it is endorsed by the original makers aswell.

You mean the Electro-Harmonix Minisynth? That's been out of production for 20 years. Or is there something else using that name now?

Would that be Gibson? How long was the license they gave Viscount supposed to last?

Just call it the Mini, or the iMogue or something....oh, wait, I think ANYTHINg lowercase i(insert word here) is an apple trademark.

Anyway, clearly state you used moog samples in the description and you should be fine. However if it looks just like a Moog and you are actually selling it for money you may have a problem regardless. If you're giving it away then (let me know, I want it!) you shouldn't have a problem.

IK Multimedia was allowed to use the Moog name in their Samplemoog package. Is basically a sampler with many gigabytes of samples from all kinds of moogs, from modulars to the mighty memorymoog. But again, the Moog guys were involved in quality testing to see if it was worth putting their prestigious name on the box. And they allegedly loved it.

You can call it... the MiniPhoog (a portmanteau of Mini, Phony, Moog.) Now how about that?

...I'm actually going to make a MMg clone called that :D
Being that you can do so many things with it [the synthesizer]... you can make sounds bigger than life.

Thanks for the tips guys. I think I'm just going to put a lot of allusions to the Moog but never use the actual name.

Never seen minimoog, but programs do use the word moog. I've seen a few in Logic 8 like moog pulse and moog lead.

Kevin Lightner is building a Minimoog filter module. My guess is that if anyone would be sensitive about a Moog copyright issue, it would be him. Here's the panel layout (Hope this is OK, Kevin):
