Can anyone recommend me some free VSTi's?

As some of you know, I got my computer running.

I'm looking for some free VST/VSTi's.

Right now I have:
MiniMouge va and TAL-Vocoder.

I also downloded VSThost (I'm unable to access the "Onboard MIDI Keyboard" function though).
Since I'm new to softsynths, any help would be appreciated.

Don't use a VST host without a sequencer; get something like Reaper to run your plugins. It's nicer, and it's not expensive either.

- PolyIblit > http://www.bostreammail.net/ers/polyiblit.html
- Synth1 > http://www.geocities.jp/daichi1969/softsynth/
- SQ8L > http://www.buchty.net/ensoniq/#sq8l
- Bootsy FX > http://rekkerd.org/bootsy-plug-ins/
- Blockfish > http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2

Of course, there's also the fine search function at http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php - but it won't be pre-filtered for quality.

The nr. 1 creativity killer is to wade through a boatload of bad-sounding SynthEdit plugins. Keep your folder clean, be ruthless.

Ok, I've been looking at a KORG nanoKEY at Guitar Center.
Would this work for playing them. I checked out Reaper but it says it's not free, and the interface was to confusing for me (a lot of stuff I don't think I'd use).

I'll second Synth1. As far as free soft synths go it's rather good!

+1 synth1

Crystal too, and Oatmeal if you can change the skin!

The other TAL synths are nice too.

Synth1 is awesome, it reminds me of Clavia's Nord Lead 2x :D .
I also got U-No-60 and TAL-BassLine. Any free Prophet-5 emulators?

Any MIDI controller will do the job, as long as it hooks up to your computer. However, you already have an Alpha Juno 2 and an ESQ-1. Why not simply buy an E-mu Xmidi 1x1 cable, then you can use your synth as a controller.

It's as cheap as it gets, seriously.

Any DAW - if you've never used one - is going to be confusing. You learned how to deal with your synths - surely you can put in some time to learn a sequencer ;).

http://www.energy-xt.com/ is also pretty damn cheap. It's just so that synths aren't as much work to program in your spare time as sequencers, which is why there are several freeware synths, but sequencers are far more rare.

I did :), it's working nicely.

I tried out Crystal a couple of years ago and I was not that fond of it. Everything I did with it came out kind of plastic-sounding.

There's a lot of really BAD freeware VSTis, and very few good ones.

You only need a few to make music, though. Synth1 is essential - I think it's better than Pro-53 and many other commercial 2 oscillator subtractive synths.

Since they're free, I'd suggest setting aside a Saturday, going to KVRaudio.com (free search: http://bit.ly/17Ug4u), and downloading ANYTHING that you think is interesting. Try and delete.

There are a handful I couldn't really live without:
SQ-8L (the one I used the most)
Stringer
Superwave P8

Forget the NanoKey, it's useless... Only good for sequencing on-the-fly on a plane, a train ride or something similar...

There's this guy/company in Poland (of all places) called Elektrostudio, and they released an unbelievable 10 (!) free VSTi's for Windows (only). Has all the good stuff: emulations of Solina type string synths, Mellotron tape machines, drum machines, a Moog type synth, even a Juno/Jupiter.

There's some issues with availability though, at the moment it seems only four of them are downloadable (from here for example: http://www.vstcafe.com/search/label/Ele ... %20Plugins) and the company's site is down.

The elektrostudio plugins are now available again and the recently reported bugs seems to be fixed. I've been playing with the plugins today and the've been running without problem.

Get them here: http://elektrostudio.ovh.org/index2.php

They are a great collection, instant Jarre! (Rhythmus + esLine = oxygene!)
