so who's shelled out for an iPad?

For computer based music makers. Discussions about plug-ins and stand alone computer synth gear.

I stopped buying new things in 1987. I'm typing this on a Sinclair plugged into Micronet. You should all be slavering over this anyway:

well... I've got one... and yeah, it's great for travel.
I use to have the Nintendo DS, with Korg DS-10 cart...
but sold it when I go the iPad.

I use these apps:
http://thestrangeagency.com/products/

plus... the Korg drum machine, Nano Loop, Techno Box and a handful of synth apps.

Again, great for travel... spur of the moment idea scratch pad... of jamming out with friends.
I've yet to try out any of the controller apps... but that's on my list.

Sure it's a little more than I wanted to spend on a toy like this...
but when you also use it for email, web, daily planner, video/music entertainment, etc
I think it's worth it.
I got the 32GB version. No 3G

No I won't be buying an iPad. Mind you I'm one of those people who doesn't own a mobile phone either. Damn irritating things. And people look at me funny when I tell them I don't have a mobile number.

Me too! Hate them. I like being isolated and without lines of communication. It's the only way. I even unplug the landline when I'm at home.

The internets are different. That's not real people. Unlike Soylent Green.

Simple. We work in multimedia. Multimedia software always pushes the boundries of required resources. For a recent example, the new ReacTable Mobile only performs well on the new iPhone 4 and the iPad... on the 3GS (not a year old) it runs like c**p, and older models... forget about it. Early models have a bad habbit of burning those of us interested in music or video composition, performance, control, etc. This hasn't been as much of an issue with PCs in recent years because their performance's shelf life exceed more than 2-3 years, unlike a mobile device. h**l it's even hurt on the Macbooks because of their slow pace @ updating specs (and cost) year to year. Being cautious is wise. Besides that, getting rid of your older mobile device is much more of a pain than getting rid of an old laptop, netbook or pc/mac.. and do you really want 2 iPads sitting around in a year? iPads are temptingly affordable, but I'm myself waiting to see what comes in the next year (apple or not).
You missed the point of what I was saying. I'm not talking about whether somebody decides to buy something or not, hopefully people are smart enough to figure out if they want something enough to buy it.

I'm talking about people who buy a piece of technology for $n to do x and y. They're happy with it and it does what they wanted it to do for a few months and then a newer version comes out for $n+b which does x, y and z. They then declare that the one they own is rubbish, even though it still does everything it's always done.

I think some people also use technology to prop up their own self-worth, which is why the release of a new model means the old one no longer performs its function. :D But because we actually use ours as tools to create things we don't suffer from this.

I'm speaking in regards to the iPhone here- every time a new version came out, I would upgrade. In my case, the best reason to this was usually driven by the increasing memory, which I needed for all my music that I like to carry around. Also, with the iPhone 4, after using the screen for awhile amd then going back to my 3GS was just night and day. The retina screen is great and really dowa baby you. I feel like a lot of apples update to products are worth a possible upgrade, but I agree it's dumb to b***h about something that was great up until gen 2 comes out. It's not like they're expected to stick with the same design year after year after year. Though they probably ahould have with the iPod nano...

man, thanks.. :)

I hope you like it.
It's just fun. That's all.
It won't replace your laptop or synths or VSTs, etc...
It's just a nice lil device for being creative...
and I tend to use it most when I'm not at home.

This is a horrible demo, but the app here is my "go to" when
my friends are jamming out on guitars, etc... and I want to join in:

MiniSynth Pro

again, just a fun thing.

def check out those "strange agency" apps.
I'm planning on sampling a lot from those two iPad native apps
for some upcoming music I'm writing.
The Space app creates some nice, raw tones.

Space
http://thestrangeagency.com/products/space-for-ipad/

and Curtis
http://thestrangeagency.com/products/curtis-for-ipad/

Of course I was too excited to wait for the iPad versions, so I also own the iPhone ones too.
But both apps are amazing on the iPad.
Great for coming up with tones to put into your sampler of choice.
I have some cool ideas on how I'm gonna use Curtis. secret

Wish Space had a filter tho... and a true ASDR.
Maybe he'll update them if we bug him enough?

I got one from work, I use it all the time. It's great for remote administration, I just wish apple would fix the BT stack so it could understand metakeys. As far as music stuff, I use iSequence. I would probably grab the korg electribe app but they jacked the price up and that's not cool. :(

wow, that's great! Finally an access to the once forbidden instrument. I wonder about the comparison with the original.
