Free gritty analog monosynth VST

Post by Jabberwalky » Fri Feb 18, 2011 2:36 pm

I've finished the first version of my VST, LoSynth. 3 oscillator analog emulation. Capable of very gritty, abrasive sounds. Full specs on the link.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Anyone that's tried it out want to give some feedback? I'm sure there are some things that could be improved for later versions

I gave it a go and actually made a pretty cool tune with it. I guess I kinda missed the point, though, as I tuned it and used it more as a regular monosynth. :C

Made a tryout tune with it. 9 Instances of LoSynth, tracked in reViSiT.
A stereo delay (effect sends for some instances) and a pumpy master compressor.

Iirc:

1 BD
2 "SD"
3 Hi Hat
4 Mellow Bass (mel
5 Rich Saw Bass
6 Saw (used for chords)
7 Lead
8 Sine bib
9 Mellow tone

Whatever the names mean for you.. Me and E.Persing both work at the ministry of silly names. :P Extensive use of short notes and pitch bending (vibrato for the lead and fast octave shifts).

suggestions:
- velocity! For volume, cut off, and for envelope decay scaling
- a free envelope you can route to anything, or if you don't want to make a mod matrix, to the osc freqs (for sync envelopes)
- on/off labels @ switches, often I'll have to guess which position does what.
- a much clearer LED ring around freq knob, hard to get the right freq, perhaps a reset button nearby to set it to C?
- more detailed LFO depth (osc pitch) in the low values.. there's maybe 1 or 2 practical setting for vibrato, for the rest there's a gazillion options for sirenes - pointless. You probably have to scale the value so it becomes logarithmic or something.
- I miss bass. Waves seem to be losing low end once you start making them brighter.

Glad you guys are liking it. I'm making a list of all the suggestions and might try to fit a few into the next version. It's all been a learning process for me, but a lot of fun.

I haven't downloaded it yet, but I may give it a spin sometime (I don't use VSTs much).

Anyway, just wondering, what did you write it in? Do you use library functions for the filters etc. or do you write your own DSP code?
Two VCO: thanks to the push rods, one can choose several forms of waves at the same time!

This was made with Synthedit 1.1, and I custom made all the graphics.

Here's a demo song I made for my group (Analog Pleasure Model) Every single sound besides the drums was created with the LoSynth VST.

I tried this out with a vst player and I must say I'm impressed with it. It's actually just what I was looking for. Sadly I'm a Pro Tools user though. Any chances you could make it available in RTAS format? I really need to get the FXpansion software to convert VSTs to RTAS but I really can't drop $100 on anything right now.

I finally got around to trying this synth yesterday. this is one of the best free vst ive used. it is very easy to make new sounds with. sounds good in poly mode too
you should make another synth sometime
