Oscillosine

Post by MPS » Tue Mar 01, 2011 5:10 am

I donated some samples from one of my vintage Hewlett Packard sine wave generators to Hollow Sun and this new Kontakt instrument is the result. It should be out in a week or two.

Almost as though it was found in the back of a damp garage after decades of neglect, Hollowsun has created Oscillosine. Reminiscent of an oddball inventor's strange homebrew creation, Oscillosine is designed to conjure the sights, sounds and smells of a 1940s experimenter's laboratory... glowing valves, otherworldly audio and maybe a hint of pipe tobacco.
The samples for Oscillosine are taken from a vintage tube Hewlett Packard sine wave test oscillator estimated to date back to the 50s or 60s, maybe earlier.

The more voices (or notes) the thing tries to play, the circuitry seems to strain slightly and the valves glow brighter which is visible through the front panel aperture.
Oscillosine offers serious abstract synthesis for the adventurous to bring something different to your productions whilst also providing more conventional sounds for more mainstream work.
For safety reasons, be sure to wear a white lab coat when operating Oscillosine."

Exactly! You understood perfectly. This thing was inspired by the early electronic music pioneers who often worked more with lab equipment than instruments per se.

Well it sounds fantastic! And after having made my first plugin I can really appreciate the fine graphics on that beast there: peeled away paint exposing rust, the tube, and the humongous waveform scope.

I'll bet it doesn't smell like hot tubes, though.
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!

It sounds beautiful! I love it. The price is very low, but I take it this will only run in Kontact & I've found on Hollow Sun's forum that he doesn't find it viable to keep supporting EXS24. Now I find that my craving for the $8 Oscillosine is pushing me to buy $400 Kontact!

Did you do those two demos on Soundcloud? They're beautiful. I am such a huge fan of old school bloop bleep electronic music. I take it you are as well, from your previous post about Tod Dockstader. Those Oscillosine demos are wonderful pieces of music in their own right. If that's the kind of stuff you do, I'd love to know how to get hold of more... Ah, I just noticed your bandcamp link; I'll check that out.
...speaking at length about something is no guarantee that understanding is advanced.

Gosh thanks 3rd. Am I blushing?

Yes I did those demos. I am working on an album that uses these very test oscillators as the main sound sources. More info can be found on my FB page (link below). I sometimes put up work in progress mixes on BandCamp and then link them at the FaceBook page so may dozen  of rabid fans can get a preview.

As far as getting Kontakt because of this instrument, all I can say is that Oscillosine and Organa are just the first two in a series of off beat, affordable instruments that Steve is planning. Without giving too much away I can say that I also own a square wave generator, and a horribly malfunctioning Hammond Solovox. ;)

I supplied the samples and he supplies the magic.
