Yeah, U-he ACE is great.
I'm not a fan of using it for vanilla-style filter work...
i.e. if you try and program a resonant sweep patch with it I'd say it comes up short, but it's great if you're doing a lot of audio-rate modulations.
I've programmed a lot of complex feedback FM-style things with it and it's a joy for that.
Really nice cross-mod pads too
filter-FM sequential style, etc.
possible to dial some great stuff.

Another +1 for Omnisphere. It's so deep, and there are so many sampled synth waveforms to start from. The built-in synth engine is outstanding.

Re: Favorite Virtual Analog Software Synth? (FTFY)
I have alot of "favorites" but this currently fits the bill as enormous time sink. Deep, massive, superb sounding, and a fresh take on semi-modular. Madrona Labs reference Buchla gear when describing their inspiration.

Re: Favorite Analog Software Synth?
DCAM's synth squad was my favorite before I got into programming the synth engine on the MC808. I really liked strobe. The overall problem of VST's is latency.
By far my favorite was Phosyon. I really liked the sequencer...and the fact you could route the midi to other synths
