Arturia Oberheim SEM V

Has anyone tried the new Arturia Oberheim SEM V? I downloaded the demo recently to compare to OP-X, which I own. I have to say I was thoroughly disappointed. Hardly any of the patches sounded "Oberheim" to me. I also tried programming something as simple as a classic filter sweep with resonance and the result was unconvincing. I have liked most of Arturia's other soft synths in the past but I'm scratching my head on this one.

Honestly, f**k Arturia - it all sounds like s**t to me and I'm no software hater. Just look to NI for brilliant sounding plugs, I'll say no more.

...but if you want *that* sound, dig your hands a little deeper into those pockets and support the guy who's still out there making these things.

Support The Little Guy. Arturia needs to go down in flames for re-using the same tweaked software modules over and over with different classic synth labels on them and adding flashy GUI features no one cares about.

I own NI's Pro-53 and that has served me well in the past, although it seems to me that NI's biggest strength is definitely the non-emulations.

Would love to buy one of those new SEM 4-voices if only I could...

Not bad. It doesn't sound quite as good as Arturia's SEM but it doesn't cost $250 either.

I am noticing what you are saying about all of the Arturia synths sounding the same. I really liked the Moog Modular and Minimoog when they came out but each successive synth after that has been less and less impressive.

Also noted your recent comment on the OP-X Pro 2. I got the upgrade and it is sounding better than ever. After comparing the SEM-V and OP-X side by side for a couple of days I can say that the OP-X definitely sounds more organic. I can't understand why Arturia completely ignored the multi-module aspect. The huge unison sounds that you can get from a 4 or 8-voice are simply nowhere to be found on the SEM-V. Here's an interesting review of the 8-voice from David Spiers at GForce. Perhaps we can hope that this means Gforce is working on their own SEM emulation.

I just played the demo it doesn't sound so bad ,but there is nothing similar with oberheim sound.The opx pro vst sounds wayyy better

Really? I think OPX-pro sounds considerably more authentic to the Oberheim sound than the Arturia SEM. Nothing Arturia makes sounds very authentic to me. I like their synths alright, but authentic they are not.

I think that the SEM V doesn't look so bad, I've considered it a couple of times, and I've listened to the sound demos of it on Arturia's website. I guess it all depends on what we prefer though

In that reply I was comparing Arturia SEM V to the "SAM", not to OP-X. I agree with you totally that OP-X sounds way closer to a real OB compared to Arturia.

I enjoyed this when I used the demo version, and it ran alright on my MacBook.

In my system (which is amd 64 x2 4800+ 2.5 GHz 3,25 GB ram) it's going like 70 % of the cpu

oh and the asio latency is set to 5 ms.

Sonic Projects OP-X Pro has the Oberheim sound. Arturia SEM has not.
