software synth that sounds like vintage Roland synths

Post by HotLoveDrama » Tue Jul 30, 2013 7:10 pm

Hi!

I kinda like the sounds of different vintage roland synth from the sh-101 or juno. What software synth would help me to approach these kind of sounds ?
Thank you!

TAL Uno 62
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

If you're on PC, this free SH-101 VST was made with Synthedit.
MDA JX10 is free and sounds very Roland-like to me.
There is a better pay version of the Juno 60 by TAL called U No LX.
Audiorealism ABL Pro is kind of a hybrid 303 and 101/202.

edit: I've played with U No LX a bit and it needs some EQ correction to sound more authentic. Here are the EQ corrections I made:
  1. Low Shelf: 800 hz, +4.0db, 0.8 bandwidth
  2. Band: 600 hz, +4.0db, 1.0 bandwidth
  3. Band: 2.7khz, -2.5db, 1.25 bandwidth
I also boosted a 10.5 khz small band about + 6db for brighter sounds, but this is less critical and can actually make the extreme treble sound too clean when up front in a mix.

I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

Also is the Roland SH-1 like the 101 ? Or is it polyphonic?

You could also try U-he's free Tyrell (which is, if not exactly a clone, at least heavily Juno 60 "inspired") or the gorgeous Diva which includes several, um, approximations of the famous Rolands (although again not direct clones).
