My favourite synth goes soft- Virtual CZ

Post by madtheory » Fri Sep 12, 2014 9:34 am

The secret is out- my favourite synth has gone virtual!

I've been on the beta testing team for this for the past six months. Oli has done a superb job getting it right. I've been having fun loading up all of my old patches and creating new ones.

This synth is kind of a secret, especially in house and dance music generally. Having a virtual version opens up new potential with it. I can heartily recommend it!

There will be a special madtheory patch bank for it, watch this space.

Hmm, but for someone like me who never touched a CZ synth, only read about them, it's not much different than playing with a DX7-clone softsynth..at least the factory patches. As with the DX7, you can do so much more if you know how the thing works. I still want the hardware to satisfy my curiosity though.

That's one of the cool things about this plug- it's a sysex editor as well!

That's a very reasonable price. Any chance of an iPad version?

How well is it working as a "programmer" for the hardware?

It loads and saves CZ SYX files, and can send sysex dumps to a CZ. It can't yet directly receive sysex dumps from a CZ, you have to load it as a syx file. No parameter changes are supported.

BTW - it's released now, and you can grab the demo version...

i may snag this, but will wait awhile. curious to see what ppl say about using it as an editor. i was encouraged to see that you could set the model mode (own a CZ1). could finally be the FM7 equiv for the CZ :)

It was tested with a CZ-1 so works perfectly with it, although it doesn't support Operation Memories. But those are very easy to do on the CZ itself, certainly compared to programming a patch.

Operation Memories? I'm not familiar with that term.

It's Casio-speak for split or layered patches on the CZ-1.
