Jan Hammer loved to sample drum sounds he liked into the Fairlight and sequence them from there. He would listen to albums and hear a certain drum sound he'd sample, or go through massive sound libraries in the record company archives looking for new drumsounds. He made loads of full drumsets that he used in various applications. All are sampled from somewhere.
Fairlight CMI + LinnDrum + homemade drum samples.

couldn't have posted better myself, multipackvitamin. great information. i'm glad to see someone posting the correct information on this thread.

Memorymoog. Arturia CMI. Roland System 8 Triton 61, Yamaha DX7 (mkI), Kawai K3M, Vintage MXR Flanger, Rockman X100 with Rockmount, Rockman Sustainor and Stereo Chorus/Delay, Fender Mustang amp.
the toms on the "secret admirer" above are easy to sample off a Miami Vice song called "The Talk". They are solo on a drum break in the middle of the song--just there for the taking...
These toms were used more than the ones on the theme song throughout the series.
I call them "The Big Toms" rather than the "Timale Toms" that are posted above.

one thing though, jan said his samples are actually samples of his own drums that he made personally. like his "favorite hit" from the drum track of whatever song. it stands to reason that he makes good drum tracks. he's an awesome drummer, too.
