Jan Hammer can be seen using a Fairlight to play the tom parts in the video for the theme song. Take that for what it's worth, i.e. not much.

I just did some research. It looks like the toms are with from a LinnDrum(Lm-2) and the snare is an acoustic drum sample from a Gretsch metal snare. The snare has compression and reverb ambiance from a lexicon likely.

Yes, they are the linndrums, because I have nostalgia vst, and in the "classic beatboxes" bank, the linndrums has those congas that sound EXACTLY the same as the Miami Vice theme. 100%!

Jan Hammer loved to sample drum sounds he liked into the Fairlight and sequence them from there. He would listen to albums and hear a certain drum sound he'd sample, or go through massive sound libraries in the record company archives looking for new drumsounds. He made loads of full drumsets that he used in various applications. All are sampled from somewhere.

Fairlight CMI + LinnDrum + homemade drum samples.

From 1985 Keyboard interview about the production of Miami Vice:

the toms on the "secret admirer" above are easy to sample off a Miami Vice song called "The Talk". They are solo on a drum break in the middle of the song--just there for the taking...

These toms were used more than the ones on the theme song throughout the series.

I call them "The Big Toms" rather than the "Timale Toms" that are posted above.

And the cool thing is, that by sampling Jan Hammer's drum sounds, you're not really cheating, because that's how he got most of them in the first place.
What goes around comes around, etc.

one thing though, jan said his samples are actually samples of his own drums that he made personally. like his "favorite hit" from the drum track of whatever song. it stands to reason that he makes good drum tracks. he's an awesome drummer, too.
