ensoniQ Mirage sound examples?

Post by PPG_HOSHII! » Sat Jan 19, 2008 2:55 am

Hi guys,

Does anybody know where I could hear some sound demo's of the EnsoniQ Mirage. I have recently been reading about these being 8-bit, and I would love to find something that sounds "dirty" like the EII (only a few hundred dollars less). If anybody would like to post a quick example or link an example, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks 8)

I've only heard "Bites" and "Remission"(sic?)
But I think those albums were much earlier.
Somebody once said that there was Mirage on The Cure: Disintegration. I know that album pretty well, if anybody knows where it was on that album?

on those 2 albums i would imagine many of the samples are mirage. i am terrible at dates though, so i would have to check, or piron or some other more dedicated fan could shed more light.

Janet Jackson's "Control" album, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, used the Ensoniq Mirage extensively. While other producers at the time used the Fairlight or the Emulator II, they used the Mirage. Songs like "Nasty" and the horn blasts from "When I Think Of You" are total Mirage sounds (some of them factory samples).

filtermod,

I will have to check out "cleanse fold and manipulate"('86).
I've been putting off listening to it for a while now.

elsongs,

I had no idea that the Mirage was used on Janet Jackson's Control album.
I know the horn blast you are talking about, interesting to know those were mirage. I assumed JJ&TL were just using the EII like everybody else around that time.

hmmmm, interesting :)

Anybody else have some examples?

Midge Ure's live tracks from the "Gift" tour (1985) feature 2 DX7s and a Mirage, but then there's an Emulator II as well, so it'll be difficult to identify.

Very nice demos portland, I really enjoy those memorial and relaxing songs made by a great sounding vintage sampler. Great work!

I did not make them, I just ran into that website. Unless you were referring to my search-engine prowess, of course. I'm surprised how smooth that choir sound is in demo 9...

thank you anyway for the link, it was very enjoyable to hear all those tracks. If I'm not mistaken, I just remember that some are the on-board demos of the Ensoniq Mr.Rack..but it sounds Mirage which is full and warm sounding. I wonder if it's just a re-sample of the Mr demos passed through the Mirage Filter and converter, or it was originally made as the Mirage demosk which is simply amazing for a sampler of it's age

I was wondering about that too. Some of the demos sound like what I imagine the mirage to sound like, as sampling is being demonstrated with samples that I hardly imagine would be in the ROM of the mr rack, but some sound way too good.

I've used a Mirage loads over the years, and I have to say I love its sound. The interface is not to everyone's taste, but if you can get your head around Hex, you'll be fine.

As for examples, if you go to my myspace page (link below) the track "hello 80s" uses Mirage strings, and this short track uses some choir samples on the Mirage. This old dance track was done using a lot of Mirage - half the drums, 303 sample, one of the synth lines - and this is almost all Mirage - both guitar parts, drum loop, funky twang - quite a bit of the body of the sound. Oh, and none of those (excpet the horror one) are multitracked - all live mixes. So the Mirage is working on 1 mono out all the time.

It's seen more use than my Akai. If I ever need to, I'll buy another at the drop of a hat.
