Emu Emulator II, Drives, Floppies & S. Designer + Demos

Post by JMP » Tue Aug 26, 2008 10:51 pm

Got my EMU II working at last and enjoying loading up some unmistakeable 80's samples, however, haven't been able to use some new DS/DD 5.25" inch floppies purchased. They format OK (I think) but no samples will save to them and/or won't take data when trying to copy an old Emu II disk. The only thing I can't verify is whether they are 48 TPI (tracks per inch) type that the manual says they must be....

Anyone experience similar issues (in case I'm doing something wrong) or know where new compatible disks can be sourced in UK or US?

Tallow, please move to Help section if most suited there, thanks.

If those disks are the ones I think you have, they should be 48tpi, DD disks. I've got a couple of boxes of the same ones and haven't opened them yet. Can't suggest anything re: checking the drive or disk quality though.

Cheers Nathan, yours the plain white box of 10 off Ebay? Little sticker stating only: MODEL: 5 1/4 in. DS/DD Made in the U.S.A....?

Wierd that they appear to format but then don't copy the sample or save data to them. I may still be doing something stupid (but have followed the manual instructions).

That's em. You put me on to them I think. I'm using 5.25" floppies for the QX-1 (or I will when I get round to it properly...) and what I've tried so far works.

Maybe there's some esoteric initiation thing to go through with these old disks... although surely they can't be as weird as those Syquest things...

Now they're a piece of technology eh? :)

Anyway panic over.... I've taken my head out of the sand and realised I'm formatting them incorrectly. Now they're working tip top ! Got another 20 on the way now.

So who wants to swap disks and/or their own EMU II samples then?

BTW Nathan buy one...., I'm pretty sure it'll be right up your street. I need someone fairly local to swap samples with. :D

hi

only to boot up the EII i use a disk - with Sounddesigner 4 EII on a vintage mac (10€) you have a faster way to load sounds into the sampler. It's like using a HD. :D

Emu Emulator II 5.25/3.25" Drives & Floppies.

Post by JMP » Mon Sep 22, 2008 10:32 am

No room for a mac myself but considering changing my lower 5.25" drive to a 3.5" one from Route 66. Anyone else done this and encountered any issues/problems ?

That's silly. Why would anyone buy SDEII when it's readily available?

Yeah, seen that thanks and have received an email from them quoting shipping to UK. Bit undecided on whether to change the drive actually, whilst most practical to do so, it kinda loses it's vintage appeal/look putting one of those in.

Both my 5.25" drives work with occasional read/write errors but I have spare that is compatible to try first. Managed to source DS/DD floppies OK. Just waiting for replacement contact buttons now so I can use the sampler easily without double/missed triggering !!

BTW, thanks for that forum link sheever.
