Other 8-bit samplers?
I know there is the obligatory Fairlight, but those are very expensive and very rare.
I also know of the Mirage, but I keep hearing about it being hard to program.
So I was wondering what other 8-bit samplers are out there?
Also, if there are more modern samplers capable of sampling at 8 bits, what are they?
Anyway, throwing it out there.

I keep hearing about how aliens have taken over the world and how The Matrix was a highly philosophical treaitse on the nature of being... Well, whatever. The Mirage is a damn sight easier to program than my Akai (S3000XL), I know that much. And it sounds good. Just make sure to stock up on the right floppies.Frayo wrote:I also know of the Mirage, but I keep hearing about it being hard to program.

E-mu Emulator II.

Most samplers allow you to change the samplerate but changing the bitrate is a bit (haha) harder.

SK1 and VSS30 are either 6 or 8 bit.

The earliest Akai and Roland samplers are 12 bit, Casio's FZ-1 is 16 bit.
I can't believe a Mirage is easier to edit than an S3000...the Mirage has only a two digit LED display and everything is in hex arithmetic

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

The SK1 is definitely 4 bit.tallowwaters wrote:SK1 and VSS30 are either 6 or 8 bit.

I ebay everything. Pawn shops are scarce...and synthesizers are even scarcer. North Carolina is not a place for music, really...except if you're a country singer....and this place is heaven if you're into bluegrass. That stuff is everywhere.
Whats gross is that I stooped to the level of letting hiphop neanderthals come in to record, but I was rewarded with stuff to put in my smoke pipe that made me almost forget all about it.
BUT! We do have moonshine! (lots of it)..and nearly all the locals are relocated hippies growing magical reality enhancing boredom reducing agents, so there are pros...somewhere.
Also there is no such thing as too loud. Neighbors are more of a myth than a reality. Even in my house. Most of my housemates are stoners and sleep most of the time.
For the few in the area who do venture into electronic music, I am ALWAYS the "guy" who knows about stuff like MIDI, DAWs, VSTis, etc, etc...so I get to help feed them. I get recommended to people from other people.
Anyway...samplers.
I wish I could afford an Emulator. Ebay drones seem to want like big bucks for their formerly $9,000 Emulator.
I do have a 12 bit Emax.....It makes me happy.
My DSS-1 has a bit depth function on it, and it goes down to 6 bits, but the problem is- it doesn't really sound like 6 or 8 bits. It sounds like the 12 bit samples at most of the time. There's nothing wrong the DSS, in fact it's in great (HEAVY, HUGE) condition. The filter on that poor thing is a joke at most, though.

Was just giving you a hard time about Asheville. I live about an hour east of you.
I always sampled my sounds into an 8 bit sampler then ported them over to my Emax II if I needed that distinctive sound.

Re: Other 8-bit samplers?
It's really not that bad. My ailing memory tells me that Hex is used mainly for sample loop points, but many parameters are decimal or on/off. In fact, I find the reduced interface is OK given the relatively small number of parameters to edit. When I used to use my Mirage every day, I could remember all I needed to know without reference to any manual, but the 3000 is more complex and despite the 'better' interface, the depth is what makes it more hassle for me.meatballfulton wrote:I can't believe a Mirage is easier to edit than an S3000...the Mirage has only a two digit LED display and everything is in hex arithmetic
But, as with many things, horses for courses.

Are you sure about the SK-1? I just got an SK-5 and the manual said it was 8 bit and I thought it was the same except 4 times the samples (errr 4 samples, I mean).
And Asheville has Don Howland and Greg Cartwright, you can't complain about that! I played there last year and it definitely had a strange atmosphere though- I've didn't know there was such a thing as hippy punks.

Ohh.. careful! I think most people seem to LOVE the dw8000/dss filter... I've heard people claim it's the best filter korg ever did. That would be the only reason the buy the DSS in most people's minds I think... maybe it depends on what you put into it.Frayo wrote: There's nothing wrong the DSS, in fact it's in great (HEAVY, HUGE) condition. oh.. apparently not. These would more likely beat you over the head with their 40oz. But whose to say what's one kind of punk versus another in these crazy times?tallowwaters wrote:I dunno.
