mpc 2000xl and swing

Post by princefan3 » Tue Dec 30, 2008 10:45 pm

hi guys....
would like youre advise on this....
i currently run a novation drumstation into cubase, but what has struck me, is that after
looking at various (you tube) clips,it was mentioned that the swing factor is highly important to
obtain that groove feel.
i can kick notes about on cubase, but am i wasting my time.would i get a better result getting
a mpc2000xl.
the boring part of the mpc is the loading where as the novation is instant...

any advise welcomed....

MPC swing isn't a magic bullet. It does sound a little nicer than a straight beat for some stuff but the real power of the MPC is the ability to play the pads yourself, so you have your swing, rather than anything else. I used to program some stuff straight on my MPC and then play other stuff live over the top, which gave a nice tight feel with enough humanisation to not be too rigid. I thought it sounded good.

Cubase can give you a swing quantise and most versions support configurable groove templates. You might even be able to find some settings that mimic the MPC.

loading samples or sequences on the mpc? i rather like the weird swing on the mpc. it has a great feel and will do the 909 house swing thing. i would sequence the drum station on the mpc and then record into cubase.
