the "shimmer" in le knight club tracks...
does anyone know what the root of that "punch & shimmer" on a lot of tracks by le knight club (along with the buffalo bunch and however many other crydamoure acts) comes from? a prime example being "gator"
is it the natural compression/distortion etc that happens on a sp-202 or sp-303? or is it moreso a particular filter unit / filter + compressor combo?
nb: i am not talking about lush cs-80 samples thrown in to pad out the disco samples, specifically just how they manage to spark up the samples on their own.
thanks in advance

Do you have any mp3 fragments or good quality Youtube links (e.g. no cellphone or camera mic c**p)?

ps. is the crydamoure medallion just a photoshop "emboss" effect or could it actually be a real thing?

Photoshop, you can see the smudges on the bottom.Roulade wrote:ps. is the crydamoure medallion just a photoshop "emboss" effect or could it actually be a real thing?
What you call punch and shimmer is better known as sidechain compression. The concept is that one audio signal (for instance, a single kick drum) "punches" the volume down of another audio signal (for instance, a complete song).
- Youtube and Google both have videos for pretty much all the software out there, since it's a very overused, tired effect by now

Embossing would have the design raised above the main surface, this looks as if it's meant to resemble engraving. And yes, definitely Photoshop, whoever did it could use a bit more practice too.Roulade wrote:ps. is the crydamoure medallion just a photoshop "emboss" effect or could it actually be a real thing?

thanks for that. i am, however, pretty aware of sidechaining and how played out it is (in my opinion mostly due to the ableton generation, et al).Yoozer wrote:

what i'm talking about is not the sidechaining/ducking. for example, the guitar at the start of (and throughout) "cherie d'amoure". it is pretty crisp yet has a little bit of grit to it (which is nicely complimented by the glowing cs-80 chords). by the "punch" in "punch & shimmer" i mean how it comes through the mix with mids and highs yet doesn't sound harsh or tinny.
the opening of "soul bells" is another example but like i said it's a bit more daft so i think is probably more down to active bitcrushing and a mutator or some other glammed out filter

Ah, well, that's what you get with language - it can be ambiguousRoulade wrote: for example, the guitar at the start of (and throughout) "cherie d'amoure". it is pretty crisp yet has a little bit of grit to it (which is nicely complimented by the glowing cs-80 chords). by the "punch" in "punch & shimmer" i mean how it comes through the mix with mids and highs yet doesn't sound harsh or tinny.

For guitars, try splitting the signal in two - one lowpassfiltered, one highpassfiltered, in such a way that having these play at the same time results in the original signal. Put the highpass filter cutoff frequency around 7-8khz, and apply a subtle distortion. This will create more higher frequency sounds without completely distorting the rest of the signal.
"Air" in vocals is often a subtle boost around 12khz.

nice to see the Blow Up EP -era logo/artwork instead of fluoro-shirted dudes at a festival going "MY PEOPLES MAAAAAATE!"
Re: the "shimmer" in le knight club tracks...
Honestly, I think most of the Crydamour stuff is a product of old 12-bit samplers aliasing and sampling direct from vinyl, similar to the way a lot of old hip hop records were made (maybe MPC60, SP-1200). If you don't have a hardware piece, there's a windows VST called JB Time Machine which emulates the characteristics of old samplers which might get you halfway there: http://www.jeroenbreebaart.com/audio_vst.htm (bottom of the page)
