Where do these beats come from?

Greetings.

This one if for the oldschool sampling druids:

I am in a quest to find out what were the original sources for the beat programming of the following songs:

1 - Enigma - "Saddeness"

2 - George Michael - "Too Funky"

3 - Duran Duran - "Come Undone" (that also appears on the song "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" by PM Dawn)

4 - Stevie V - "Dirty Cash"

5 - Suzanne Vega - "Tom's Dinner" (DNA Remix)

Are these beats from some early sampling library or just the result of clever drum sequencing?

I am really not sure if the songs above represent the "first generation" of tunes to use these beats, or if they were borrowed from someone else before that. But that's not even the point, they are just examples. I just want to discover what machine of method was used to create them.

Thanks in advance to all the synthheads out there that can help me.

There weren't any libraries of beats back in the 80s, just libraries of drum hits. That's because sampler memory was in KBytes rather than Mbytes allowing only a few seconds in most cases. Putting a four-bar beat in a single sample wasn't possible so the beats had to be chopped and resequenced manually.

Samplers used back then were primarily the Emulator (or EMax), Fairlight and Akai S series (950? 1000?).

It is Ashley's Roachclip by the Soul Searchers.

I think the other songs you have mentioned are just drum sequencing.

The beat background of COME UNDONE can be found on several 80ies early 90ies songs, like

"STARS": Simple Red

"Baby don't forget my number": Milly Vanilly.

That's what it seems to me, please correct me if I'm wrong

Lol. I don't think futureworlder was referring to the original post. Last night when I was on here there was a post about curing all your credit card debt ills. It seems to have been deleted because it was obviously spam. That does make it pretty confusing when reading the thread.

Jan Hammer for instance got access to his record label's full sample library, and created all his drumsets by sampling the sounds one by one into the fairlight cmi, and sequenced them like a midi roll in the CMI sequencer.

He's said in interviews that he'd sit for hours just listening to drum sounds and find a cool bassdrum here and a good snare there, then compiled them into full drumsets that he'd use on his songs (and the Miami Vice series).

Uhhh...there used to be a time when people didn't use sampling librarys for drum loops...

But the loop used by George Michael's "Too Funky" was "Never Stop" by the Brand New Heavies (the intro of the song begins with the drum and percussion beat).

Actually, the "Come Undone" and "Too Funky" beats were my main targets.

I acknowledge that the other songs are actual drum programming instead of sampling.

Tom's Diner was all S950. They would also process the vocals to line them up to the tempo, segment by segment until the track was done. I have a 950 and can attest to the fact that it is wonderful, sounds huge (and noisy) on anything you put into it, and when sampling breaks, it gets quite a bit Paid in Full or U-U-Utah Sa....
