Emu SP1200 pricing

Why are the SP 1200s so damn expensive on Ebay? Didn't they make more of those than any other stand alone sampler, form like '85 to '98. I just go off the bay and saw one for a buy it now price of 2,000, 1,750, and I think the cheapest one was 1,250USD. I don't know, I was gonna sell mine, but if these prices are any indication of "real" worth I may just put it in a case and keep it until the price goes up to 10,000 in a year or two.

I know it's a true vintage and outstanding machine, but damn. I like to come to VSE to get a feel of what people consider the worth of somethings. I remember before Ebay you could get any old drum machine/sampler/bass synth from the 80's for almost nothing. Even Linndrums, and 808's.

So, what do you guys and gals think, is the SP 1200 worth two grand?

it's a well known machine, I would sell it now....
I think once the Linn Analog Drum Machine is released, there will be a shift.

I see them now and then for in between $800-1000. One was even in the original box.

Neh I dunno about buying and selling gear. I would probably want to keep an SP1200 if I had the cash. Although there is enough gear around So Cal to buy and sell the good deals get rushed by the re-sellers too fast.

On a side not a Sidstation, that belonged to Edit(glitch mob), just sold for like 850...wtf! I know I have a C64 and plan on a midibox but a Sidstation in the 800's in these days?

Yeah, I think I wouldn't pay more than 800- to 1200 now, I bought this one for 350.00. Not your "average deal". I was holding it for someone and he ran into baby/money troubles and asked what I had in the bank for the SP 1200. I told him 350, and boom I got an sp 1200.

I'm not a reseller per se, but I do live in Memphis where the rap game is strong, and for a few reputable, albeit broke a*s producers I rent this thing out from time to time. I've mad around $1,700 in two years off of renting it to studios. I guess I am a reseller, and seller and seller. I've also made rental cash on my RX 8 and Motif es 7. I try not to sell equipment, but I'll be goddamned if I'm not gonna let it help pay my bills rather than sit in my studio.

When is Linn going to release a new machine? Eh, I've been out of it. I've been buying old Wurlitzer 140's 145B's and 112's and not worrying about synths as of late.

I still don't think the linn machine will get that scratchy 12 bit east coast sound, unless it has sampling mode, with bit rate selection. analog is GREAT!!! but 12 bit has that Vinyl sound. But again, what the f**k do I know, you could be right. I hope you are, I'll buy a few more. I love the sound.

I saw one for sale on eBay Australia the other day with a starting price of 50 cents I think. It shot up to around $150 and then the seller took it off. They must have realized how much these things actually sell for.

im sure the seller knew how much it was worth the idiot just put a low selling price and obviously no one is going to bid that high for one if they can get it for cheap

There are a few instruments who's reputation (i.e. list of users) automatically commands a high price rather than the instruments actual functionality-worth. The SP1200 being one of them.

Not sure if these high prices are being paid by those that *know* the machines (and there are obviously plus points in the sound and simplicity of an SP1200), or those that have only read about them and decided that's what they need to make their music sound as good as DJ wotsit or MC spanner.

I guess those "in the know" would buy an SP12 Turbo for 1/3 of the price.... or just snap up a rare SP1200 bargain if one is offered well under the market value.

I certainly enjoyed mine (bought one of the last Final Editions from Emu UK many years back, used it, put it up for sale for the overinflated prices that others were asking for theirs and bingo, sold it for a profit, bizarre).
I personally preferred the swing on my Linn/Forat 9000 although that machine also had it's own limitations, esp as as mine didn't have the full sampling upgrade. IMHO the Sequential Studio 440 is the daddy (at least you can change the filter cut-off freq dynamically and have SCSI with the later O/S releases... although I'd bet an SP1200 would be way more reliable.
