i have to say - neither one of those ideas sounds right at all.

i think i'll try running it through my microkorg, and possibly the sl-20 pedal. then perhaps i'll look into violently attacking my throat or covering speakers.

Never used and ESX, but on th ES-1, the "chop" or whatever feature it is does the thing where it cuts a sample up into 16 (or however many you specify) pieces, and you can turn each piece on/off with the sequencer buttons. Turn off every other one (or different patterns if you want to get saucy with it) and boom, you're there.
