Although they are temperamental, ZIP drives/disks can last a long time when care is taken.
There is a program called TIP (Trouble In Paradise) that can check ZIP disks/drives for errors and the click of death.
Some people mistakenly try to format ZIP drives as though they are hard drives with a stepper motor (for example using "format" instead of "arrange" on an Akai sampler) this is not a good idea.
