I'm looking for good digital stage piano suggestions

Post by vynlOverdrive » Thu Apr 10, 2014 8:11 am

I'm planning on spending about $1,000 (US) on a (preferably used) good digital stage piano.

It needs to have good-feeling weighted keys and a really good acoustic piano sound and a few good Hammond-y organ tones.

I want an Nord Electro (or Nord Stage) but that's outta the budget.

I was thinking about something like a Kawai MP-6 or maybe even an M-Audio ProKeys 88.

Suggestions? Tips? Thoughts? Thanks.
Always consider the source.

I'm not really up on my organ tones; I guess I'm looking for something the Beatles might have used.

Get a 2nd hand Yamaha P-150. It has two acoustic pianos, a nice CP70 emulation, a DX7-type electric piano, other electric pianos, bas,s strings, vibes and... virtual drawbars for you to create your own organ sounds, complete with Leslie simulation, 32 memory locations. It's an excellent MiDi controller too with built-in MIdi merge.

Not familiar with that Yamaha but it sounds good from that description.

Roland FP-4 perhaps? Fairly thorough library of sounds including quite a few usable organs (and I can recall two patches that would have passed for Billy Preston's Hammond sounds in some of the later Beatles stuff). It's not as editable a keyboard as the newer (and relatively stunning) RD-800, but the FP-4 is very playable, and would probably be quite well priced 2nd hand.

I'm not mad about the Roland piano sounds personally. I owned a P150 for 14 years and I really recommend it.
