EMU 4000 Hard disk questions

On my research for Samplers with internal harddisks, i found a thread where a user mentioned a SCSI-to-PCI adapter. Dont know, if such a thing exists, but if, it could be another possibility to mount younger harddisks than the SCSI ones.

My first PCs had SCSI drives, so i remember they were pretty loud and noisy back in that time. The Quantum HD which is mounted inside my ESI-4000 doesnt amke any noise, by suprise

There are PATA and SATA to SCSI adapters, but they cost a bundle.

No, i meant another thing. A user reported 2 or 3 years ago, he had found an adapter which makes a PCI connection out of an existing SCSI connection. As said, dont know if its true, but that guy posted a link for this adapter, and it seemed to be a "real" product. Too bad i didnt bookmarked it. I tried Google to find this topic again, but without result.

Never heard of anything like that. Going so would basically require a computer hosting a scsi bus and doing data translation.

But i dont think that it is that simple to make a PCI connection out of a SCSI connection.
My feeling says, using such a plastic adapter would be way too easy. Especially if you know SCSI and its behaviour.

Hm, thats a real good question. To be honest, i never looked inside as i bought this unit as it was. Maybe i could ask the guy who sold me this unit. He is from germany and specialized on upgrading samplers by EMU. For example, he shippes out the EMUs with the 15 GB harddisk already mounted, and onto the harddisk there is the complete EMU library pre-installed. Like all sound by Planet Phatt, Orbit and some other devices by EMU.

I am back with the infos i promised to share here. I contacted the guy i bought the ESI-4000 with the internal 15 GB harddisk from. He said, the internal HD is connected to the internal power bus of the ESI-4000 and that no additional power supply has been needed. Maybe this answer is helpful to you.

Marco - thanks for checking. Does your ESI also have an internal Zip drive as well as the HD, or a standard floppy. I have an ESI-4000 Turbo that came with the built-in Zip so I don't haven to overload it adding in a HD as well.

No, the internal HD is placed where the floppy drive was placed before. So, in fact, my ESI-4000 has only an internal HD, which is great because the OS is booted faster from the HD than from the floppy.

Because of the internal HD there is no further drive like Zip drive or anything else. The HD fits all of my needs.

Are you sure you're not meaning SCSI to IDE adapter? ie hooking up a normal IDE hard drive to an EMU SCSI port using an adapter?

The SCSI to IDE adapter is what's in my SCSI to CF card reader in my ESi4000. It has 2 boards in it - the SCSI to IDE board, and the IDE to CF board. They just plug in to each other as part of the whole unit, which is cased in a floppy drive case to directly replace the Esi's floppy drive, and has a CF slot in the front. If I wanted to, I could disconnect the IDE to CF reader from the SCSI to IDE board, and connect an IDE hard drive to it.

Wouldn't want to though - that's the whole point of SCSI to CF adapters - ditch the moving parts/noise and get faster load times as well

Except that the OS is in ROM not on disc. Under your Turbo effects board, in two chips 3.02 being the final rev.

You´re right. That was what i meant originally. My fault. I meant IDE instead of PCI.

Like i said... PATA (Parallel ATA) = IDE, Serial ATA is what followed it.

I guess you have that CF device by Lotharek, right? Recommendable?

Also right. I forgot this as i am used to boot the OS on my other AKAIs from floppy drive.
