Boss DR660 display problem

Postby gmeredith » Fri Sep 26, 2008 7:29 am

Hi, I have a Dr660 that has an intermittent display issue. Most of the time when I switch it on, it comes up with all the numbers and letters as 888 ie, all the LCD elements showing at once, so you can't read it. Its also fainter. The machne operates normally other than that - it plays, all the sounds/pads work etc., MIDI works.

If its been on for a few hours, sometimes I can switch it off and back on again and the display will come good, and will stay good for while it stays on. Switching it off and then on again sometimes/sometimes not shows the display ok.

Anyone had this issue? I've opened it up and checked internal connectors and busses and reseated them but no difference.

Any ideas? cheers, graham

I've got a few ideas. But let me check my service manual to make sure.

I'll try to come back to you asap

2 things comes to mind

1) The LCD Driver (IC16) is about to give up
2) is poorly fed (usually 5V)

The chip is a surface-mount one (square). The average person cannot solder it: it's very difficult and require experience. The inner working is Logic.

BUT it's quite possible that the flatstrap from the LCD and the board is loose or have a cracked solder joint. A cracked solder joint CANNOT be seen with naked eyes. You need a magnifier. It's check that first before jumping on the bad chip theory.

I've got the service manual

Thanks for that, I'll try testing the 5V supply tracks with a meter to see if there is a weak spot. Maybe also there could be a floating/bad connecting earth track to the IC. But you've given me a few ideas to start. Thanks! I noticed you have the service manual there. Looks like I'll be getting that off you next payday hehe!

Cheers, graham

Hey i've had my dr660 for about 6 months everythings been working fine and then the same thing happened to me, first, the lcd screen was starting up with "backupNG" then "initall" then would turn on, after about 20 minutes it would freeze then sound would stop coming from it, i thought it was a battery problem so i replaced the battery was very gentle, it started working fine then after about 20 minutes it turned off, i turned it back on and thats when it started displaying the dull "888", did you manage to solve the problem?

No, not really, it seemed to be power pack related, as I wasn't using the original Boss AC12V power pack. I used a DC 12V pack instead, which does work, but sometimes I get the display problem with it. I've since retired my DR660s now for better equipment, they're in my "out-dated, but can't let go of them" box

Ok thanks! My power supply isn't Boss but it is AC12V, but maybe i should try a different power supply and see what happens! I'll let you know if i find the problem, maybe your dr660s will see the light of day once more...Cheers!
