Kawai K1 as MIDI controller

Postby pharoah » Fri Feb 16, 2018 6:19 am

I bought an old Kawai K1 which seems in good shape.
I replaced the internal battery, bought a MIDI-USB interface (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078LTK37Y), and I was able to restore the presets from my Mac using SysEx Librarian, by setting the K1 to MIDI RCV.

However, the opposite direction doesn't work at all. Ableton Live recognizes the interface, but even though I set the K1 to MIDI TRS (and made sure to turn all RCV options to ON), no notes get to Live.
The MIDI Monitor program also doesn't record any events.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Or should I just get a more expensive MIDI interface?

It's on page 36 of the manual IIRC?

Does the interface show activity when you press a key?

Does the interface show up properly in Audio MIDI Setup?
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Turns out it was just a matter of using a better interface. This works out of the box: https://www.iconnectivity.com/products/midi/mio/

Must be a manufacturing QA problem. Usually cheapo interfaces don't have a big enough buffer for sysex, but can handle note i/o fine.
