Sending SysEx patches to Yamaha TX7

Post by translucencecs » Fri Mar 16, 2018 2:04 am

Hi guys... I'm having a minor nightmare trying to populate a recently-acquired Yamaha TX7 with patches downloaded from various websites. Basically, the TX7 seems to steadfastly ignore SysEx.

I'm using MIDI-OX and a generic USB interface to send (although I've also tried various combinations including Bome's Send-SX and a MIDISport 2x2), and although I can get the PC to receive SysEx from the TX and I can play notes on the TX from MIDI-OX, and the TX's Mem Protect is definitely off, the TX7 just doesn't seem to want to receive anything that I send it.

Does anyone have a definitive and foolproof series of steps that I have to follow, to make this work? I had a TX7 about 15 years ago, and I don't recall this being an issue then! (Although I was using older PC hardware and software back then, so maybe something changed...)

I've also Googled this, but none of the online resources help (including this site)!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Some of the generic usb midi interfaces won't do longer string codes. They are fine for general midi messages, but I would not trust them for bulk dumping, firmware updating, or much handling of sysex codes. Try a proper midi interface, not sure what all that includes (midisport or not), but I use an focusrite scarlette 2i4. Other than that maybe just make sure your midi cables are working, I guess by testing it on some other equipment or using one you know works. Other than that I don't know, factory reset on the TX7??

Check mode and send a dump request on MIDI RCV.CH. 1:

F0 43 20 00 F7 - voice edit buffer, VCED 163 bytes
F0 43 20 09 F7 - voice data 1~32, VMEM 4104 bytes

Next, send the received data blocks back to TX7.
