Ensoniq ESQ-1 models - are parts generally interchangeable?

Postby Tiger Jackson » Fri Sep 07, 2018 3:18 am

Talking about the plastic and metal case models.

I'm going to swap out my cart reader with one from ebay. But will I have trouble with this? Like ribbon cable length issues etc.

Check the service manual for yourself to be sure. It has specific sections on plastic and metal case models. I don't recall anything about the cart, but check for yourself.

The service manual said there are no interchangeable parts.

I just finished replacing my ribbon cable with one from ebay. Seller said he sent me one for the plastic case, and it fitted just like the other. But it still won't read the carts, but the rest of the synth is functioning. What else could this be? The cart buttons just don't work? The entire sector on the PCB went bad or something?

I don't know exactly about that part of the ESQ as I haven't had a need to figure it out. But I can point you in the right direction. You'll need to check any buffer caps and/ or resistors after that ribbon cable. If that doesn't find a culprit you'll need an oscilloscope or a logic probe, and look up the data sheets for the digital chips dealing with data i/o.

If we're lucky Rasputin has looked over the i/o here and has some more specific thoughts...

An alternative is to use a computer with SysEx to save your patches.
