Roland D50 operates very slowly

Post by mIIwaukee » Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:06 am

I got a D-50 for a great deal, but it’s inexplicably slow. Boot up time takes a few minutes.

Once booted key panel presses take 30 seconds to register. Keyboard works after long delay (it does sound pretty awesome). It passes all startup tests except for the joystick/bender/mod/ext test. They may move too “fast” to register... idk. Midi works, it kinda takes a sysex file or at least enough to load a patch.

Here is what Ive tried so far without success:

System Reset

Cleaned the circuit boards

Replaced the battery

Disconnected cables from the main board to other boards

Replaced capacitors on the PSU

Replaced the 12mhz crystal

Examined the main board closely for faults

Reseated the eprom

Any other suggestions on what I might try?

hi and welcome on the board.
if memory serves me right there are 2 crystals on the d50 mainboard.
Can you measure their frequency?
Relativelly new cheap multimeters can read frequencies up to 50 MHz

Thanks Yekuku. I’ve ordered a scope to test. I will report back once I get it setup.

I have heard that if you reverse the pins of a problematic crystal oscillator , it might start working again.
Since you are waiting for an oscilloscope to arrive, you can try this on the 2nd crystal and see if sth changes.
