Akai AX60 - Pitch weirdness

Post by Frayo » Mon Mar 02, 2020 5:54 pm

It powers up, makes sounds, and access presets fine. Parameter control works.

The voices respond correctly to parameter changes, but the tuning just doesn't work.

When you press a key, it starts at almost the right frequency, then just drops down like a portamento. The auto tune button causes the synth to lock up and crash.

Also, for some reason one voice is noticeably louder than the other voices. All voices do sound off, though.

Mine has done this for the last five or six years at least, intermittently but fairly often. It's most often a problem upon having just turned the synth on. My guess is it has something to do with oscillator drift, but I'm not too knowledgeable on the electromechanical stuff there.

My recommendation is to leave it on in a warm, not humid room for at least an hour or two. Just press the keys again to reset whatever patch you're using and it may work without issue. Sometimes you need to play with the EG control. I find it hasn't been an issue when I sequence it with MIDI.

I think I might have permanent voice drift almost a semi tone sharp that I have to adjust for with the tune knob and play a half step higher than the actual note...not sure what to do about that yet.

To clarify my earlier post, the EG depth slider may need to be used. Turn it all the way off then open it at little as needed to stabilize the pitch from dropping as you release a key. Reload the patch as needed.
