Akai AX-60 tuning problems...

Post by SlickHenry » Wed Aug 15, 2007 11:39 pm

I recently purhcased an Akai AX-60, which is an amazing synth and exceptionally fun to play. However, I've noticed when in conjunction with my other synths it always seems out of tune. The auto-tune feature does not seem to help and when I go to the fine tune knob on the back instead of giving me a range between+/- .5 semitones it seems to jump between -40 cents and +40 cents instantly. Besides this sudden jump the tuning knob does not allow any other change pitch. Any thoughts why this could be? Other than the tuning problem the synth is in remarkable shape.

I'm no expert, but if the tuning know on the back is jumping that far, there most be an issue with that potentiometer.

Great synth, though. Hope you get it working!

I've owned 2 and they've always been flaky in regards to tuning. I think it's the sliders really...those things are s**t.

Also, let it warm up for 10 minutes before hitting the tune button.
Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

I've got the service manual. I'll dig into it when it'll be a bit less crazy in the shop.

First thing the tuning chart from the service manual:

Note: there is no specific tuning procedure in the AX-60 manual.

After checking the schematics, it appears that it's only the pot (10K) that is defective. You can either clean it or replace it. So Z was right.
