Pitch bend resolution on Doepfer MCV4

I'm using a Doepfer MCV4 to control my ARP Odyssey with MIDI. It works beautifully. However, the 1/4-semitone stepped resolution of the pitch bend is a real buzz-kill. It's nowhere close to a smooth-sounding pitch-bend. Has anyone had any luck getting a smoother pitch-bend CV using a different device, or by running the MCV output through some sort of smoother? I can't just send it through a lag processor, because that will affect both the pitch-bend smoothness and the portamento.
