(sorry i'm not very good at technical terms,
but i hope someone understands me and can help a little...)
i was originally using an Alesis 6fx mixer with the '2track' (rca) to/from
my soundcard (emu 0404 unbalananced 1/4" in/out). i was able to
switch where i wanted the 2trk to input on the mixer
(into the cntrl room/headphone or the main mix or both).
this worked fine for a long time, where i'd be able to record a track
into the computer, play back the track into the mixer but not into
the MIX itself so i could then record another track while the first
track was playing, without the first track doubling itself in the mix.
BUT!
i've now got a Rolls RM203x (rackmount 10ch mixer)
which does not have this '2track' option! it does have
rca in/out, but the rca in goes straight to the mix
(like another line-in). so... my question is this...
what should i do so i can have a proper
output for my speakers/headphones?
i was thinking i could do one of these:
mixer->soundcard->small power amp w/ headphone output?
(money for: 1u small power amp, passive speakers)
or mixer->soundcard->powered monitors w/ headphone output?
(money for: powered speakers w/ 1/4" inputs)
or to spend NO money!?
my soundcard is supposed to have 4in 4out (0404 right?)
but how come my left/right 1/4" inputs,
and left/right 1/4" outputs only equal 2in2out?
does anyone know how to make the patchmix software
change the left/right outputs into seperate stereo (balanced?) outputs?
or if anyone has some other ideas....
how do YOU record to/from your computer/mixer?!
thanks!
/danial
(note: i'd like keep this whole idea rack mounted)

i would do that, only this new mixer it isn't "tape" in/outAltitude wrote:I would just connect the tape in/out to your soundcard
it's "record" in/out. so i can't monitor AND record at the same time,
because what i'm monitoring (from the computer) goes straight into
the recording mix, back into the computer.
but thanks for clearing up the +2 DIGITAL in/out part on my soundcard,
now i know i need to find a different route. like a cheap headphone amp
or 1u power amp.
