JX8P Midi Control

Postby Snarecrash » Mon Jun 08, 2009 11:18 am

Hey,

i'm a proud owner of a Roland JX-8P since saturday. It has an impressive full and warm sound.
I was playing and making patches the whole weekend and just can't get away from the synth. :)
Unfortunaltely the JX8P has no Midi CC's to easily control sound-parameters in my software sequencer,
it's possible with sysex commands though.
What are existing possibilities to control the JX8P sound parameters like VCF cutoff in realtime in my sequencer? Maybe a sysex to CC conversion plugin or something like that?

Thanks,
Mark

Get the external hardware PG-800 programmer if possible and use with and external sequencer and you will be very satisfied :D

I really can't afford to pay twice the price for the programmer as i paid for the JX8P itself,
so this is not an option. When theres an PG800 on ebay people almost kill each other to get it. :violent1:

I'm sure there is some way to control it from my software sequencer.

Unless you are specifically requesting to be able to automate parameters from your sequencer, you can use this:

I will have to dig around, but I know I've seen a VSTi Jx-8P controller with full automation capabilities as well.

To automate the sound parameters from the sequencer is exactly what i'm after.
A VSTi that is capable of doing this would be the best solution, but i'm still searching the net for a plugin
and i had no success yet, so it would be great if you could post a link.
I know PCJX8P already, it's a great program and i think i did some cool sounds already. 8)

The JX-8P is such a cool sounding synth. I love the bass, strings, and pads. I've been using the edit slider and tweaking patches and saving them on a C-16 cartridge. It's definitely an underrated synth that has amazing sounds and textures. You can control some parameters through midi (velocity, aftertouch, etc.) It's much more fun to just tweak edit on the fly, so keep your eyes open for a PG-800 or just get used to the edit slider.

Then again...http://www.synthzone.com/mschreier/html/pcjx8p.htm

I've not seen a VST editor for the JX8P, but before scoring my PG-800 I picked up a BCR-2000 midi knob panel that can transmit sysex messages via midi to the jx8p. I never finished programming it, though. As iprog mentioned, the PG-800 transforms the synth, really - should be considered a required accessory. Get a midi arpeggiator or sequencer, too (ableton live!). If you're patient with ebay you can find a sane deal on a PG.

Since I've mentioned it, the PG-800 connects to the JX-8P with a 6-pin DIN cable (NOT a midi cable) that's also used as a Commodore 64/VIC 20 tape drive connector - I found mine after looking at this thread:

Thank you snsr for the hint with the BCR2000, it's maybe the best solution as long as i can't get my hands on a PG-800. Btw, theres currently a PG-800 on german ebay, it's already at over 300 euros and the auction goes two more days! That's INSANE!!!
At least i already have the right cable as i have some of those C64 cables lying around.

You could use my BCR2000 preset file and layout:

https://github.com/jorr-it/jx8p-controller

The repository contains both preset files for BCR2000 as well as Novation SL Mk II. I tried both, but prefer the BCR2000 because no menu diving is needed.
